Is Your P6 Child Confused About Photosynthesis? Here's What They Need to Know
Photosynthesis is one of those topics that shows up on almost every P6 Science exam (especially PSLE) — and yet so many students lose marks on it, not because it's too difficult, but because they mix up the key details under pressure.
If your child has ever written "plants breathe in oxygen" or forgotten what is needed for photosynthesis, you're not alone. Let's break this topic down clearly, the way we do it here at Tutor Suzanne.
What Is Photosynthesis, Really?
At its core, photosynthesis is how green plants make their own food. The process takes place primarily in the leaves, where three ingredients come together: light, carbon dioxide, and water. From these, the plant produces sugar (for energy) and releases oxygen as a by-product. Any extra sugar that isn't used immediately gets stored as starch.
Simple enough, but the exam questions are rarely that straightforward.
Where Do the Ingredients Come From?
This is where students often lose marks. It's not enough to know what a plant needs, your child needs to know how each ingredient enters the plant:
Light is captured by chlorophyll, a green pigment found inside leaves. Knowledge on chloroplasts is no longer necessary since 2026
Carbon dioxide enters the leaf through tiny openings called stomata.
Water is absorbed from the soil by the roots and carried up to the leaves through the water-carrying tubes.
Examiners love asking about these pathways, so make sure your child can name the correct structure for each one.
What Affects How Fast a Plant Photosynthesises?
The rate of photosynthesis isn't fixed, it changes depending on the conditions. The three main factors are:
The amount of light: more light means faster photosynthesis
The amount of carbon dioxide: more CO₂ means faster photosynthesis
The amount of water: more water means faster photosynthesis
A common exam question will describe a scenario (e.g. a plant was covered by black paper) and ask students to explain what happens to the rate of photosynthesis. Knowing these three factors by heart makes those questions much easier.

Photosynthesis vs Respiration: Don't Mix Them Up
This is probably the most common source of confusion at P6 level. Students know both processes but get them jumbled. Here's a clean comparison:
Photosynthesis only happens in green plants, and only when light is present. It takes in carbon dioxide and water, and produces sugar and oxygen.
Respiration, on the other hand, happens in all living organisms, all the time, day and night. It takes in oxygen and digested food, and produces carbon dioxide, water and energy.
Notice that the inputs and outputs are almost mirror images of each other. That's actually a helpful memory trick, but it's also why students flip them under exam conditions.
